Cassis, dried cherries, a touch of meatiness, gravelly earth tones, cigar ash, a trace of chipotle pepper, and a wonderfully discrete young oak base characterize the Beychevelle 1989. The wine is deep, full-bodied, complex, and acidic for the vintage on the palate, with superb focus and grip, a wonderful core, mild tannins, and a long, balanced, and flowering finish. Given how beautifully Beychevelle ages, it’s still early days for the 1989, but the wine is now sliding into its peak maturity plateau and starting to sip generously and breedably.
