With around 24-48 hours of decanting, the Mouton Rothschild 2000 is at its peak. The wine has a deep ruby/purple color and hesitant but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts, thanks to an 86 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 14 percent Merlot combination. Full-bodied, strong, tannic, and backward, with exceptional purity and solidity in addition to apparent toasty oak, it is dense, chewy, and backward. Aeration over 24 to 48 hours just scratches the surface of its possibilities. This blockbuster will last a very long time. It isn’t as expressive as the other first-growth Medocs, but it will improve with age. It is what is on the inside that counts! 2015-2050+ is the expected maturity date.
